| I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, but moved to Chamblee, Georgia with my Mom, Dad, and three brothers when I was in 4th grade. I attended Chamblee High School as a member of the class of '78. While in high school, I took joint enrollment classes in French at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. I planned to attend Agnes Scott College and major in French, but I ended up getting married instead at the age of 18. I had two beautiful daughters and became a single mom at the age of 21. In order to make a better life for my children, I decided to return to college in 1982. I first attended DeKalb Community College in Dunwoody, Georgia, then later transferred to Agnes Scott as a "return to college" student in 1984. But tuition there was out of my reach, and in January of 1986 I transferred to Georgia State University, where I decided to major in Secondary Math Education, because there was a dire need for math teachers, and it was likely that I would find a job. In 1988, I remarried and we became a "blended" family, as my husband David also has two children. After many long years of night classes while I worked as a teacher's aide at Spalding Drive Elementary School, I finally got my Bachelor's Degree in December of 1992. I was hired to teach math at Chattahoochee High School in January of 1993. I soon discovered that I did not particularly enjoy teaching! The next year I spent working several part-time jobs, including tutoring and working at the mall. In August of 1994, I found my dream job, and was hired as a Technology Specialist at Findley Oaks Elementary School. I was involved in anything and everything that had to do with the school computer network. This was a brand new position, so those of us that were lucky enough to get hired that first year were able to develop our own job description. I learned more than I thought I would ever know about computers that year, and not only did I love it, I was good at it too! Then my husband decided it was time for him to move on in his career, so in August of 1995 we packed up and moved with three of the children to Dover, Delaware. This was very traumatic for the girls as they were in the middle of high school, but they soon found places for themselves in their new school and neighborhood. Christie joined the Caesar Rodney Cheerleading Squad, and I had a great time going to watch her in competitions. Lindie graduated from C.R. in 1997, and began college at Emory University in Atlanta. We soon realized that college tuitions were going to keep us in debt the rest of our lives! In 1998, Lindie returned to Delaware vowing never to leave. My husband David is employed with Federal Highway Administration. While living in Delaware for his job I taught math at Middletown High School, Middletown Delaware. I also took some classes at the University of Delaware. In November of 1999, we moved again, this time all the way to California! Since the girls stayed in school in Delaware, we became "empty nesters." Lindie is currently attending Wesley College in Dover in the nursing program, and is doing very well. She will graduate this May. In August 2002, Lindie married Tim Garrett, and they are living in a house in the historic district of Dover. Christie graduated from the University of Delaware in May 2002 with a business degree, and is working for AIG in New York City. Since coming to California, I first worked as a training coordinator for the Community College Foundation in Sacramento, where I helped to train teachers to use their new classroom computers. I moved into full-time training at IS Inc. in March, 2001, where I gained many computer skills that I hope to use in future career opportunities. Next I trained teachers for Cable in the Classroom, showing them how to use cable TV and Internet resources in the curriculum. Now I am available to do contract work through my new "business" - Sunstruck Multimedia, and I am having a lot of fun working on my web sites! I am also taking classes at UC Davis Extension in hopes of getting my Web Design Certificate. I am currently working part-time as a computer lab assistant at Foothill Oaks Elementary School in the Rio Linda Union School District. | |
